Yumiko Yasunari Hoyano (1939-2014) was born and raised in Hokkaido, Japan and immigrated to Edmonton, Canada in 1967 to pursue graduate studies in chemistry. She was interested in art since her youth, particularly the medium of painting, but also had interests in sewing, quilting, and other crafts. After her retirement from a career in chemistry, Yumiko began to focus on watercolour painting. She painted landscapes, often depicting the local trees and topography of Alberta, her home of many decades. Yumiko taught painting in the community through the Edmonton Japanese Canadian Association and was a member of the Edmonton Art Club.
